Fallarien, also known as the Abandoned Island, is an island located to the southwest of the continent of Galukia. It was uninhabited until Melius 150, when a mysterious plague struck the Holy Kingdom of Noigllado ; those affected would lose all consciousness and roam around aimlessly without a sense of self. In 154, Noigllado's king decided to send all affected people away to the island, to stop the plague from spreading, and to let everyone forget about them for the better.
Upon being abandoned on the island, the sufferers kept wandering until one of them found a spring. When the water came in contact with his body, he regained sentience, but his memories were lost. He soon realized everyone around him was not sentient, and cured them with the water. The exiled people then started a new civilization on the island, without attempting to go back.
The water was not only a cure, but also a source of many miracles : it could make flowers bloom in a wasteland and would ensure bountiful harvests. Thanks to it, people would live longer and in better health ; it was so miraculous it could do almost everything, but more miraculous yet was that it never stopped flowing ; the spring never went dry. Thanks to this power that they soon deemed holy and worshiped as the Spring of Lourdes, the life of the people of Fallarien was peaceful and easy.
Generations later, Hannes was born on the island to a woman who had become pregnant after drinking the spring's water, then had died in childbirth. It was in her life-time that the spring was revealed to hide a black sword, from which spoke a voice telling her to punish the inhabitants, because they had all abused the spring's powers. The reason for that was that in exchange for all of these miracles, they had given nothing and thought of all of them as completely natural and due. By the hand of Hannes, Fallarien burned down to the ground.
